FAQs

Will it pass an MOT inspection?

As mentioned, 3D and 4D plates are fully legal and will pass an MOT as long as they meet the specifications outlined above, so no need to worry!

If your personalised plate is, however, made to a different colour, finish, or features different character spacing, you will fail the MOT. We not only ensure that plates meet the required standard, but our high-quality finish also exceeds these regulations as we want to make sure that you never experience issues with your Bespoke Plates product.

A qualified MOT examiner will also know the various rules and requirements for custom plates so you should never experience any issues.

Do I need to inform insurance?

Personally we have never had any issues with number plates being on our vehicles with motor insurers as the modification does not affect the cars ability to drive. However, you are more than welcome to inform your insurer anyways for that added peace of mind.

How are 3D and 4D number plates made?

If you tune in to our live tiktok videos @uniqautos you can find out!

3D and 4D number plates are made in similar ways with a few differences which give them their unique characteristics.

The process begins with a precise specification for both plates. To do this you can either use our online ordering form, which covers all components that make up your plate or contact us directly for more bespoke orders.

Next, we produce a standard number as your personalised plate still needs to be the same colour and size. This also allows us to use the plate as a guide for either the 3D gel letters or 4D acrylic ones.

We then install your digits using an industrial-strength adhesive, ensuring that letters are entirely secure and legally spaced. They are then left to dry and cure fully.

Both plates are then coated in a high-quality, shiny resin and placed in a warm oven to remove any bubbles or marks. Once cooled and left to harden, we finish the edging and remove any remaining imperfections. As a number plate maker, we have a responsibility to ensure that all products are of road-standard quality, so we also carry out a meticulous testing phase for every item.

Just like that, your new custom plate is ready to install! With speedy lead times, you would be forgiven for thinking this is a simple process.

It is, however, a complex art-form that we are proud to be a part of.

Are 3D/4D plates legal?

4D/3D plates use acrylic characters for a more pronounced profile but they do still comply with all of the requirements set out in the ML BSAU 145E 021 British Standard. Our legal 4D plates also satisfy the requirements outlined in the March 2022 motoring update which mentions that number plates must:

Meet new durability standards.

Plates now need to be tougher and extra-durable to withstand destructive materials that can be found on the road. Encouraging road users to ensure their plates are abrasion free, our 3D and 4D plates are a brilliant example of how you can invest in a custom number plate and ensure your car is compliant.

Only feature one colour on raised characters.

Characters must only be in solid block colours for 3D and 4D plates. Acrylic lettering is fine, but solid colours must be used to ensure that the colours are not distorted even when the light hits.

We take our role as a custom number plate maker seriously and would only ever sell you a legal plate that met all of these needs. We also sell a selection of show 4D plates, but we will make it clear to you at the ordering stage what is allowed for use on UK roads.

You can find out more about the legality of 3D and 4D custom plates in our blog post.

Furthermore, the DVLA’s INF104 leaflet is a brilliant source of detailed information.
